One evening, Rafi walked home from his friend’s house. The street was quiet and the sky was dark.
এক সন্ধ্যায় রাফি বন্ধুর বাড়ি থেকে বাড়ি যাচ্ছিল। রাস্তাটা শান্ত আর আকাশে অন্ধকার। সে রাস্তার ওপর একটি ছোট লণ্ঠন দেখল।
One evening, Rafi walked home from his friend’s house. The street was quiet and the sky was dark. He saw a small lantern lying on the road. Rafi picked it up and gave it a try.
এক সন্ধ্যায় রাফি বন্ধুর বাড়ি থেকে বাড়ি যাচ্ছিল। রাস্তাটা শান্ত আর আকাশে অন্ধকার। সে রাস্তার ওপর একটি ছোট লণ্ঠন দেখল। রাফি সেটি তুলে নিল এবং জ্বালিয়ে দেখল।
A woman stood under a tree and looked worried. She had lost her lantern and her son was inside a house nearby. "I can't find my way," she said. Rafi wanted to help.
একজন মহিলা একটি গাছের নিচে দুশ্চিন্তায় দাঁড়িয়ে ছিলেন। তাঁর লণ্ঠনটি হারিয়ে গেছে এবং তাঁর ছেলে কাছের একটি বাড়ির ভেতরে ছিল। "আমি পথ পাচ্ছি না," তিনি বললেন। রাফি সাহায্য করতে চাইল।
Rafi asked, "Which house is your son in?" The woman pointed to a blue door across the lane. The path was narrow and a little dark. Rafi held the lantern higher and said, "Come with me."
রাফি জিজ্ঞাসা করল, "আপনার ছেলে কোন বাড়িতে?" মহিলা গলির অপর পাশে নীল দরজার দিকে ইশারা করলেন। পথটা সংকীর্ণ আর একটু অন্ধকার। রাফি লণ্ঠনটা উপরে তুলে বলল, "আমার সঙ্গে আসুন।"
They walked slowly together. Rafi spoke softly so the woman would feel safe. On the way, a cat crossed and a dog barked, but Rafi stayed calm. The light from the lantern showed the stones and the plants.
তারা ধীরে ধীরে একসাথে চলল। রাফি কোমল কণ্ঠে কথা বলল, যাতে মহিলা নিরাপদ বোধ করেন। পথে একটি বিড়াল রাস্তা পার হল এবং একটি কুকুর ঘেউ ঘেউ করল, কিন্তু রাফি শান্ত থাকল। লণ্ঠনের আলোতে পথের পাথর আর গাছপালা দেখা যাচ্ছিল।
At the blue door, a small boy ran out and hugged his mother. "Ammi!" he cried. The mother thanked Rafi and smiled. Rafi felt proud and happy to help.
নীল দরজার কাছে একটি ছোট ছেলে বেরিয়ে এসে তার আম্মুকে জড়িয়ে ধরল। "আম্মি!" সে ডেকে উঠল। মা রাফিকে ধন্যবাদ দিলেন এবং হাসলেন। সাহায্য করতে পেরে রাফি গর্বিত ও খুশি হলো।
Before leaving, the mother said, "You are brave, Rafi." Rafi waved and put the lantern on a shelf by the door so they could find it. He walked home under the stars, pleased he had helped a neighbour. The town felt a little brighter that night.
যাওয়ার আগে মা বললেন, "তুমি সাহসী, রাফি।" রাফি হাত নেড়ে লণ্ঠনটা দরজার পাশে একটি তাকের ওপর রেখে দিল, যাতে তারা সহজে খুঁজে পায়। সে তারার নিচে বাড়ি ফিরল, খুশি যে সে এক প্রতিবেশীকে সাহায্য করেছে। ওই রাতে শহরটা একটু উজ্জ্বল লাগল।
