সমীর আর সামিরা তাদের ঘরের পেছনের ছোট বাগানের পাশে থাকে। এক সন্ধ্যায় তারা পেছনের সিঁড়িতে বসে আকাশে তারা উঠতে দেখল।
Samir and Samira live near a small garden behind their house. One evening they sat on the back steps and watched the stars come out.
সমীর আর সামিরা তাদের ঘরের পেছনের ছোট বাগানের পাশে থাকে। এক সন্ধ্যায় তারা পেছনের সিঁড়িতে বসে আকাশে তারা উঠতে দেখল। একটু বৃষ্টি হওয়ার পর ভেজা ঘাসের গন্ধ পাওয়া যাচ্ছিল। তারা একটা নিম গাছ থেকে নরম শব্দ শুনল।
Samir and Samira live near a small garden behind their house. One evening they sat on the back steps and watched the stars come out. The air smelled of wet grass after a little rain. They heard a soft sound from a neem tree.
সামিরা ফিসফিস করে বলল, “তুমি কি সেটা শুনলে?” সমীর মাথা নাড়ল আর গাছের কাছে ধীরে ধীরে গেল। ডালের মধ্যে ছোট একটা বাদামি আকার নড়ছিল। তারা মুখ দেখতে পেলো না, কেবল বড় গোল চোখ যা আলোয় ঝিলমিল করছিল।
Samira whispered, “Did you hear that?” Samir nodded and tiptoed closer to the tree. A small brown shape moved in the branches. They could not see the face, only big round eyes that shone in the light.
তাদের আব্বু টর্চ নিয়ে বাইরে এলেন এবং হাসলেন। তিনি বললেন, “এটা কোনো রাতের পাখি হতে পারে। চলো চুপচাপ দেখে নেই।” আম্মু একটা কাঁথা নিয়ে এসে বসলেন। তারা খুব চুপচাপ বসে রইল, যাতে অতিথি ভয় না পায়।
Their Abbu came out with a torch and smiled. He said, “It might be a night bird. Let us watch quietly.” Ammu brought a blanket and sat down. They sat very still so they would not frighten the visitor.
একটা ছোট পেঁচা নিচু ডালে নামল। সে চোখ ঝপঝপ করে মাথা ঘোরালো। পরিবারের সবাই পেঁচাকে খাবার খুঁজতে দেখল। সামিরা আস্তে করে জিজ্ঞেস করল, “এটা কী খাবে?”
A small owl hopped down to a low branch. It blinked and turned its head. The family watched the owl look for food. Samira asked softly, “What will it eat?”
আব্বু বুঝিয়ে দিলেন, “পেঁচারা রাতে ইঁদুর আর পোকামাকড় খায়। তারা আমাদের বাগানের ক্ষতিকর পোকা দূরে রাখে।” সমীর হাসল। তার মনে গর্ব হলো, পেঁচাটি তাদের গাছগুলোর উপকার করছে।
Abbu explained, “Owls eat small animals like mice and insects at night. They help our garden by keeping pests away.” Samir smiled. He felt proud that the owl was helping their plants.
সামিরা পেঁচাকে ছোঁতে চেয়েছিল, কিন্তু আম্মু বলল, “না, তাকে জায়গা দাও।” তারা জানল পেঁচা বন্য এবং সহজে ভয় পায়। তাই তারা একটু দূর থেকে চুপ করে দেখল। তারপর পেঁচা আরেক গাছে উড়ে গেল।
Samira wanted to touch the owl, but Ammu said, “No, give it space.” They learned the owl was wild and could be scared. So they kept quiet and watched from a little distance. The owl then flew to another tree.
পরের সকালে তারা ছোট টর্চ নিয়ে বাগানটা ঘুরে দেখল এবং কিছু ছোট গর্ত আর নরম পালক পেল। সমীর বলল, “আমাদের পাখিদের জন্য পাতা আর শান্ত জায়গা রাখতে হবে।” আম্মু বলল, “নিচু ডাল কাটা চলবে না।”
Next morning they checked the garden with small lights and found some tiny holes and soft feathers. Samir said, “We should leave leaves and a quiet place for the birds.” Ammu added, “We must not cut the low branches.”
সেই রাতে পেঁচাটি আবার এসে একই নিম গাছে বসল। সমীর আস্তে করে হাত নাড়ল এবং বলল, “ধন্যবাদ।” সামিরা ফিসফিস করে বলল, “আমরা তোমার বাগান নিরাপদ রাখব।” রাতের অতিথিকে রক্ষা করতে পেরে পরিবারটি খুশি হলো।
That night the owl visited again and sat on the same neem tree. Samir waved softly and said, “Thank you.” Samira whispered, “We will keep your garden safe.” The family felt happy to protect the night visitor.
